MOVI - Reading motivation for autistic children
In collaboration with Landsforeningen Autisme we came up with a concept that would motivate autistic children to continuously practice reading and by doing that, improving their ability to read. An issue for autistic children is that they often have a hard time imagining that they can learn something new. They don’t see the learning process.
The solution was a two-part concept: one part being a physical artefact, Movi, to which the child had the primary interaction. The other part was an application for the parents to set reading goals for their child.
MOVI - A reading buddy for the child
The physical artefact Movi was a furry, colorful fantasy creature with big eyes, a little nose, a luminous mouth and a backpack. The primary goal was to motivate the child through a reward system. After the child had read a certain amount, the child would interact with Movi and the mouth would light up more and more when the child progressed. When the mouth would be fully lit, the child would have completed a reading goal, thereby triggering the backpack on Movi which would contain a reward.
An application for the parents
The application was meant for the parent to insert reading goals for the child to receive a reward. The application would then communicate with Movi and thereby track the child’s progression.
